In what we've seen as Monk Gyatso, first met in episode three of Book One: Air - The Southern Air Temple, he is a loving teacher who feels strongly for Aang, much like a father-figure. In order to teach Aang, he resorts to childish playing that proves to be beneficial in the end. He met his untimely death at the hands of the Fire Nation's assault on the Southern Air Temple, his body left behind which Aang will later find and shocks him about what happened to the place he called home.
Monk Gyatso can be considered as one of the leaders, though not as defined. He helped with teaching the children, for all those born to the Air Nomads were Airbenders, to Airbend. He was looked down upon for his overly kindness to Aang.

Gyatso seems to be very more in tune with how to interact with children, showing a more playful spirit but he is incredibly kind and cares deeply. He is a clever, resourceful man who took Aang under his wings to be his mentor.
