Episode Title: Imprisoned
Book: Air
Episode Number: 6
Chapter Number: 6
Summary:
In their travels, Aang, Sokka, and Katara find themselves in a Earthbending town ruled by the Fire Nation. Before they even enter, they hear a noise that they discover comes from a young man named Haru, who is practicing his Earthbending. While Aang and Sokka discuss careful approaching, Katara is already ahead, trying to get the man's attention who once spotted, flees. They find the town and spy the man entering a building and follow suit.
Katara approaches him again and asks about his Earthbending when his mother begins to berate him for doing so. To be caught Earthbending would mean that Haru would go to jail. It turns out that all the men and any Earthbenders had been taken into prison five years ago. The town is forced to work in coal mines. And the people are forced into overtaxes, paying for their safety against the Firebenders.
As Haru and Katara develop a friendship, he reveals about his father and that Earthbending makes him feel closer to him, and Katara reveals that her necklace was given to her by her mother. They hear shouts and find a mine shaft had deteriorated, the old man being crushed by a great amount of earth. In order to save him, Katara urges Haru to Earthbend which saves the man who merely rats him out. The Fire Nation comes in the middle of the night and takes Haru away in arrest.
Morning approaches and once Katara finds out, she devises a plan to rescue him. Sokka helps out with the details as Katara will 'earthbend' due to Aang using airbending to lift a rock next to her. After a few words emulating a argument between Sokka and Katara, she threatens him with Earthbending and after a few cues to Aang, he steps up to lift the rock. Behind the rock, with arms up, is Momo, cleaning himself. The Fire Nation soldier is astonished that Momo is bending when it's pointed out that Katara is the one doing it. Sokka grabs her, telling them to take her away while whispering that she has twelve hours.
It doesn't take long to find Haru, who had found his father. Katara attempts to rally but finds the people unwilling. They simply want to wait out the war, keep themselves safe. After the twelve hours are up, Katara refuses to leave the prisoners, still intent on saving Haru and his father so a new plan is devised. Just like with how Katara was captured, Katara assumes that if they can get coal to the Earthbenders, they'll fight back.
Everything goes into plan as morning comes. Katara stands on the mound of coal, again urging the Earthbenders to take their stand, to not let the enemy win and yet, none listen. The warden laughs at her, even mocks her but when he attempts to approach, someone strikes a coal at him. It shows Haru, using the Earthbending to roll the rocks in the air, his face a mask of retaliation and anger. As the Firebenders move to subdue, his father aids his son and they send the main group of fire benders, including the warden, overboard. Once the Earthbenders have taken full control of the ship, they head back home to save their town and all other towns ruled by the Fire Nation. As Haru and his father thank for Katara for bringing them courage again, Katara suddenly realizes her necklace is gone. The chapter ends as Zuko is on the ruined prison, picking up her necklace and clenching it as he watches the sunset.
